Back in January 1848, James W. Marshall, a carpenter overseeing the construction of  Sutter’s sawmill in Californina’s Coloma Valley, saw glittering metal in a streambed.

Marshall reached into the water grasped gold flakes, and shouted,

“boys, I believe we have found a gold mine.”

The California Gold Rush had begun… Gold the most precious of all metal, had been discovered and the world was suddenly full of possibilities.

During these pioneering times people either made fortunes or perished in poverty in the pursuit of elusive riches.
